Is Chocolate Bad For Your Health?

February 27, 2009 by Alex Ion

Since the time of Greeks and Romans chocolate has been considered as the food of gods and a tasty delicacy that is pleasing for the senses immensely.

This dark delight has many lovers across the planet and from the age of 3 to the age of 80, everyone and anyone who has tasted it, find it hard to part with this dark addiction. With modern research claiming that chocolate comes wrapped with plenty of health benefits and others arguing that it is far more damaging to health than useful, where does this leave the tasty delicacy? Should we all dig ourselves into more chocolate and take larger bites or are we supposed to ease back on the sweet urge?

Health Benefits of Chocolate

Modern research has indeed indicated many health benefits that emerge from chocolate consumption. But the more important factor here is to understand that these are benefits coming from the consumption of cocoa rather than the commercial version of chocolate in the market.

Cocoa indeed has an ability to keep blood pressure in check, increase blood flow, release sufficient anti-oxidants to keep the body healthy, releasing endorphins in brain that reduce pain levels, stress reduction, stimulation sensuous pleasure and reducing risk of heart attack and cancer. The multitude of benefits would force you to believe that eating chocolate is one easy way of keeping all the ailments away, but that is not quite true!

The story is really complete when you understand that processed chocolate offers great amounts of sugar, very few vital nutrients and the cocoa that has been processed loses next to all its healthy components.

This most often means that commercial chocolate consumption would be detrimental to your health rather than beneficial and poorer is the quality of the chocolate, greater the health hazards. The side effects could be obesity, skin problems, fat accumulation and even a marijuana-like effect in some cases.

As in the case of most things in life- moderation is the key here as well.

Drug Rehabilitation Program: Seeing the Light at the End of a Dark Tunnel

February 26, 2009 by Alex Ion

There are times and places in all our lives when we chose to fall prey to the dark temptations around us and while some might be smaller demons and others larger, when it comes to slaying our woes, everyone could use a bit of help.

Drug addiction is a phenomenon that is hitting the youth across the planet at a scary pace and with the fast night life and peer-pressure forcing young minds in this direction. It is essential to have a system in place that does what is required to deal with the situation. It is the addiction one needs to get rid off, not the person and for this both patience and scientific approach are a must. But drug rehab treatment and relocation programs seem to achieve certain success in this regard.

Once an individual gets lost in the murky and deadly world of drugs, the first thing to do is to help him realize the trouble he is in and generate a will to fight the problem. If the individual does not cooperate, then it is impossible to fight the problem.

However, several drug rehab programs like the Narconon Vistabay center start off in this direction. The first step is to free the body from any remaining drugs and narcotic components using a sauna based, drug-free detox program. This of course is the easy part. The real challenge comes later on when special educational therapies that are designed to teach the patient self-control need to take effect.

If the patient learns to woo himself away from drugs for a considerable period of time, then it is the first major step of success. Additional therapy and a follow-up program to assist the patient back into society then follow. The Narconon Vistabay claims to be successful in 76% of cases and while that is commendable, it still means 1/4th still go back to drugs.

But since most programs fail to delve into the psychological problems of the patient and why they were forced into the world of narcotics, a more methodic and complete approach would probably help more people recover in a much better fashion, a lot faster.

America’s Health Insurance Plans: Will Obama really bring in change?

February 13, 2009 by Alex Ion

Health care and insurance plans must be a primary concern for every government across the planet as ensuring the welfare of citizens and providing them with a proper and affordable health care system is one of their fundamental duties.

America’s Health Insurance Program (AHIP) has tried its best over the years to bring every individual under its umbrella, yet many people still seemed to be opting out of it for reasons such as age, employment status and earnings. With Barrack Obama making bold statements and pitching in progressive ideas before the elections, how will the promises hold up with ‘change’ having arrived in the capital?

In the latest report submitted to AHIP, PricewaterhouseCoopers finds that 87 cents out of every premium dollar go directly towards paying for medical services. Most of this could be cut down if health insurance plans were adopted by every American citizen. The Obama campaign estimated that his health care reform plan will cost between $50 and $65 billion a year when fully phased in and it will be paid from the discontinuing of the Bush tax cuts, which will earn the federal treasury a whooping $250,000 per year.

One of the major steps in cutting the family insurance costs would be the implementation of catastrophic reinsurance coverage, something that Obama has been campaigning forever now. By adding this clause, it would be the federal government that absorbs a large portion of the highest cost claims thereby taking these costs out of the price of health insurance. According to early projections, this would take down health insurance costs for an average family by good $2500 each year. Despite the government moving in this direction, universal health care and insurance coverage seem still a very long way away.

And according to the AHIP, it is the creation of a financially sound and sustainable health care system that can withstand and see through the current economic meltdown that will be the key to success.

The targets for saving the expenditure on health care are being projected at a bold $500 billion over the next five years, but that would only be possible if close to complete health insurance coverage is possible. Quality health system, affordable medical facilities and awareness will be the key aspects that the new Obama cabinet needs to concentrate on if they wish to bring down health care costs and ensure that every American is insured. Like in the case of so many others, we will have to wait and watch if Change is really here!
